Widden Primary School

Year 4

Welcome to Year 4!

Welcome to Year 4! We are so excited to work with you this year and are looking forward to all of the amazing learning that we will share together.

It’s set to be a fantastic term full of learning and fun!

We’ve got a busy and exciting term ahead in Year 4, with lots of learning, creativity, and splashing about!

English

In writing this term, the children will be using The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo as their main text. The story follows a boy called Michael and his powerful friendship with a white lion, exploring themes of friendship, separation, courage, and memory as the story moves between Africa and England.
Using the book as inspiration, the children will be developing their writing skills through a range of different writing outcomes, focusing on both creativity and accuracy.

Maths

In Maths, we’ll be sharpening our skills with:

  • Multiplication using both formal and informal methods

  • Length and perimeter (measuring up nicely!)

  • Fractions and decimals

There’ll be plenty of problem-solving and chances for children to explain how they’ve worked things out.

PE

Our PE days this term are Thursday and Friday.

  • Thursday: Swimming

  • Friday: Dance

Swimming lessons begin immediately (8th January) and will take place every Thursday throughout the term. Swimming is a mandatory part of the curriculum, so all children are expected to take part unless they are medically exempt or you have informed the school office of a specific reason.

Please ensure your child brings the following every Thursday:

  1. Swimming costume

    • One-piece swimsuit for girls

    • Swimming trunks for boys

  2. Towel (big enough for a proper dry!)

  3. Swim cap (optional)

  4. Goggles (optional)

  5. Rash vest/swim shirt (optional)

Please avoid loose, baggy shorts or cotton T-shirts, as these become heavy in the water and aren’t safe for swimming. We also ask that children leave jewellery at home on swimming days.

Science

In Science, we’ll be making some noise (the sensible kind!) as we learn all about sound—how it’s made, how it travels, and how we hear it.

Art

In Art, we’ll be getting colourful and creative while studying the bold designs of Clarice Cliff.

PSHE

In PSHE, we’ll be focusing on Dreams and Goals, encouraging children to aim high and think about how they can work towards their aspirations.

Geography

In Geography, we’ll be going with the flow as we learn all about rivers, including how they form, their key features, and why they matter.
