ORACY
At Widden, children aspire to communicate clearly, confidently and effectively across a variety of contexts. Through speaking, listening, and discussion activities that are woven into our curriculum, our children will enhance their skills in expressing ideas, reasoning, and opinions while respecting others’ perspectives. Oracy learning will also focus on building vocabulary, body language, tone, and active listening to foster meaningful conversations and critical thinking. We use the ABC approach, which allows us to agree, build on or challenge others' ideas whilst maintaining respect and diversity in our culture.
Achieve
Oracy allows our children to achieve their full potential as thinkers, reflectors and communicators. Through carefully planned discussion opportunities, children develop their own ideas that can be shared with others. Our children make connections across their learning and harbour a deep understanding of oracy skills that will equip them for later life.
Resilience
We nurture resilience by encouraging our children to ask questions, reflect on their questions and answers and respectfully challenge or disagree with others. Children build self-awareness, empathy and effective communication and are empowered to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships and navigate challenges with resilience.
Progressive
Our oracy curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure progression is achieved from Early Years to Year Six. The curriculum is designed to provide a clear and coherent progression of skills whilst being carefully designed to ensure continuity and depth.
Community
Children at Widden live in a rich, diverse community which enables them to interact with a wide range of people. Children are equipped with the vital communication skills to communicate effectively throughout their life and continue to use the ABC approach as they grow and develop.
Diversity
The diversity of our community provides both an opportunity and a challenge for our children. Our multicultural school is unique and enables children to engage in high quality discussion and debate across the wider curriculum. We actively challenge stereotypes and promote inclusivity in our oracy curriculum through carefully planned and timed discussion activities across all subjects.
Equity
Every child deserves access to a high quality oracy education, providing support and challenges tailored to their individual needs. Through scaffolding and inclusive learning opportunities we ensure that all children, regardless of background or ability, can succeed and develop into successful thinkers, reflectors and communicators.
