Geography
At Widden Primary School we encourage children to engage with, and be inquisitive about, the world around them. Through a question based, enquiry curriculum children will develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and their place in it. Our aim is for children to understand the connections between humans and the physical geography of the planet on which we live and how one can affect the other. They will have the opportunities to understand how their city, and the world around it, has changed over time and how technology and mankind has shaped this world today. We want our children to investigate the structure of our Earth and be able to understand the different cultures and communities that share the world with us. We want to provide opportunities for the children to be advocates of positive change in the world in which we live; the generation who makes a difference.
At Widden we:
-
Teach children to 'be geographers'; we want children to ask questions, develop research skills and evaluate material to inform opinions, and learn about how geographers reach their answers.
-
Ensure there is the opportunity to increase their knowledge of other cultures and, in so doing, teach a respect and understanding of what it means to be a positive citizen in a multi-cultural country.
-
Provide rich, engaging learning opportunities that enthuse, engage, and motivate children to learn and foster a sense of curiosity and wonder at the beauty of the world around them.
-
Encourage children to have a commitment to sustainable development and an appreciation of what ‘global citizenship’ means. We appreciate that geography is a dynamic subject and support this through the discussion of current affairs for example; COP26.
-
Stimulate an interest in their surroundings and develop a knowledge and understanding of the physical and human processes which shape places.
-
Give children a sense of their own surroundings and build strong relationships through learning about their own locality and community, and the interaction between people and the environment.
-
Develop children's geographical skills, including how to use, draw and interpret maps of different scales, and the vocabulary necessary to carry out effective geographical enquiry.
-
Teach children to work geographically in a range of appropriate contexts, using a variety of materials and equipment including other people’s experiences and knowledge. Fieldwork opportunities are planned so that children gain experience of data-gathering, analysis and presentation.
Reception children made collage maps and found out which animals lived on land and which lived in the ocean.
