PE
At Widden, the intent of the Physical Education (PE) curriculum is to foster a commitment to diversity, uphold integrity, and enhance community engagement through physical activity and sport. Our aspirational curriculum plan champions inclusivity and aims to develop physically literate individuals who are equipped with essential movement skills and a lifelong appreciation for health and fitness. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, students progress from fundamental motor skills in early years to advanced tactical understanding and teamwork in upper school, ultimately achieving an ability to participate in a broad range of physical activities.
The curriculum encompasses a wide scope, including individual and team sports, dance, and outdoor activities, helping learners to explore their interests and discover new passions. Disciplinary knowledge in our PE curriculum comes through opportunities for the children to choose and apply their own actions, balances, movements and skills. Once they have mastered the specific skills, they have opportunities to apply these within sports and games and therefore have to choose different strategies and the best way to approach different challenges. As they move through school, their skills and knowledge around tactics become more complex and they have to work collaboratively to make decisions. There are lots of opportunities for the children to evaluate their performances and reflect on how they will improve next time. We develop substantive knowledge and key skills through systematic revisitation. This culminates in the deliberate practice and development of specific skills that can be used in a variety of disciplines, sports and games.
The end points focus on not only demonstrating physical competence but also exhibiting social skills through cooperative play and resilience in the face of challenge. We plan to be fully inclusive, with tailored approaches for disadvantaged children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). This includes differentiated activities and targeted support, ensuring that every child can access and thrive within the PE curriculum, thus promoting equality and empowering all learners to achieve their full potential.
